Meta’s Muse meets a 5% Treasury yield

Muse raised questions about who keeps the customer. A 10-year yield at 5.106% changed what investors will pay for future profits.

Two stories unsettled investors this week. Meta’s new AI assistant raised questions about the future of consumer apps. At the same time, U.S. Treasury yields climbed sharply, putting pressure on stock valuations across the market.

These stories have different causes. Together they ask which companies keep their customers as agents get more useful, and how much future profits are worth when interest rates are high.

Two questions

Which companies keep the customer when an agent can shop for them?

Muse can start the purchase. The insurer, hotel, or retailer may still provide the product, but the customer may spend less time in that company’s app. Businesses built on being the first stop have to compete harder on price and service.

This week

Fed Governor Michael Barr said further policy adjustments would likely be needed in his base case. A $70 billion five-year note auction drew weak demand. The 10-year yield rose about 14 basis points to 5.106%.

Why Muse worries consumer businesses

Meta launched Muse on September 8. According to Meta’s announcement, the assistant can use a browser to book travel, fill out forms, compare options, and make purchases with a user’s approval. It works through its own app and WhatsApp.

Muse has not shut down other apps. The concern is that it could become the place where a customer starts a purchase. Someone might tell Muse to find a cheaper insurance policy or book a trip, then let it search several services. The insurer, hotel, or retailer would still provide the product, but the customer might spend less time on its app or website.

That matters to businesses built around being the familiar place customers visit first. A travel site earns value by attracting shoppers and helping them compare bookings. An insurer may benefit when customers renew without shopping around. If an agent makes comparison and switching easier, those businesses may have to compete harder on price and service. This is the risk investors were reacting to, according to Bloomberg’s reporting published by the Los Angeles Times. The report described selling in travel, insurance, banking, and other consumer shares.

The outcome is far from settled. Some companies may gain a new sales channel. Others are refusing access.

The investment question is more specific than whether AI replaces apps. It is whether agents can reliably complete transactions, whether businesses will let them in, and who earns money when a sale begins with an agent.

Why Treasury yields jumped

The bond market was reacting to the economy and interest rates. A September survey showed U.S. business activity growing faster than expected.

Strong growth is usually welcome, but investors also worried that demand and inflation would remain strong enough to prompt more Federal Reserve rate increases. In a September 23 speech, Fed Governor Michael Barr said further policy adjustments would likely be needed in his base case.

Bond selling intensified after a $70 billion auction of five-year Treasury notes drew weak demand. By late afternoon, the 10-year Treasury yield had risen about 14 basis points to 5.106%, its highest level since 2007, according to Reuters’ market report. Bond prices fall when their yields rise: buyers demand a higher return to hold them.

About 14 basis points higher by late afternoon. Highest level since 2007, per the Reuters market report. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point, so 14 basis points is 0.14 percentage point.

What a higher yield does to a future dollar

Higher Treasury yields can raise borrowing costs for households and companies. They also give investors a higher return from bonds, which can make expensive stocks less attractive. The pressure can be especially strong for companies whose share prices depend heavily on profits expected years from now.

How the two stories meet

Muse is causing investors to rethink future profits for some consumer businesses. Rising yields are changing the price investors will pay today for future profits across many businesses. A company can face both pressures at once, even though Meta’s product launch did not cause the Treasury selloff.

The stock market’s first reaction is a warning about possible change, not a verdict. Muse still needs sustained use, dependable access to other services, and a way to create value for customers and participating businesses. Bond yields can also move again as new inflation data, Fed decisions, and Treasury auctions arrive.

For now, watch what people actually do with Muse, which companies cooperate or block it, and whether the 10-year yield stays near 5%. Those developments will tell more than one day of headlines. The desk’s US cash tape is on Markets.
